The next day we were off on another road trip but this time in a brand new car complete with on-board GPS navigation system. We zipped along the Shikoku expressway through mountains and tunnels until we arrived in Takamatsu in Kagawa-ken. This neighboring prefecture lies directly to the north of Tokushima and is home to one of the most historic and beautiful Japanese Gardens in the country. It is also the birthplace and namesake of one of our favorite dishes, Sanuki udon (derived from the prefecture’s ancient name). With the sun shining, flowers blooming and birds singing, it was an idyllic spring day to amble along the winding stone paths of the botanical elysium known as Ritsurin Koen.

We had lunch at our favorite sanuki udon shop. They make the best niku udon and is the reason for our frequent returns to Takamatsu.
