The Grand Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan

The Grand Hotel (圓山大飯店  Yuánshān Dà Fàndiàn) in Taipei has always been one of my favorite buildings in Taipei. When I was little and our family lived in Taiwan, the Grand Hotel was one of the first buildings I ever recognized. Our family has sweet memories here and so I really wanted to visit again for sentimental reasons. It really is such a beautiful and historic hotel. Our whole family enjoyed visiting the lobby, surrounding grounds, and my children even got to see a wedding celebration!

Things to know:

*Established in 1952 by Madam Chiang, Soong Mei-ling, the Grand Hotel is Taiwan’s first five-star hotel.

*After Chiang Kai-shek came to Taiwan in 1949, he wanted to build a five-star hotel to accommodate foreign ambassadors and guests. His wife, Madame Chiang, suggested building it on the old Taiwan Hotel on Yuanshan Mountain.

*The hotel stands midway up Yuanshan, overlooking Keelung River in the front, Songshan in the east, Danshui in the west, and offers a great view of Taipei.

*The main building is 285 ft high and is one of the world’s tallest Chinese classical buildings.

*The 14-story palace-like hotel features vermilion columns, gilded tiles, and classic eastern aesthetics.

*The hotel has 500 guest rooms, 4 Western and Chinese gourmet restaurants, and large banquet halls.

*Since its establishment in 1952, the Grand Hotel has witnessed the history and progress of Taiwan and is one of Taipei’s most recognizable landmarks.
