Crystal Cave, Wisconsin

It’s like The Goonies but in Wisconsin!

Crystal Cave is the longest cave in Wisconsin and only 1 hour drive from the Twin Cities. We booked online in advance to join a 1 hour guided cave tour. We made sure to dress warm, since the temperature inside is consistently 50 degrees, with good shoes because it can be muddy. The tour was very family-friendly and we enjoyed learning about the history and geology of the cave from our knowledgeable and entertaining guide. My kids loved seeing bats, fossils, and exploring the gift shop afterwards. We packed a lunch to enjoy after the tour and ate at the lovely picnic area outside. The October sunshine and fall colors were beautiful! The grandparents treated the kids to panning for gems, fossils, and crystals at Prospector’s Creek next to the picnic area. Everyone had so much fun – it was a real life treasure hunt! They also had laminated information sheets so we could learn about the different types of treasures we found. Crystal Cave is a great family-friendly destination outside the Twin Cities and is opened seasonally from April through the end of October.
