Kowloon Food & Shopping in Hong Kong

This last week in Hong Kong will always be one of my favorite memories. I had a whole week to spend with my mother before heading back to the U.S. for good. Naturally, when the two of us get together we do lots of shopping and eating…both of which are ideal in Hong Kong! This time around we explored the shops on the Kowloon side. Huilau Shan, the Cantonese dessert shop is found on nearly every corner in Hong Kong. You’ll find bowls of fresh and tasty mango, coconut milk, black sticky-rice, tapioca and all other sorts of fruits, ice creams and puddings. This was my heaven on earth. It’s super popular among the locals and you can find over fifty stores in and around Hong Kong! Besides Huilau Shan, the streets are lined with fruit stands and local shops that sell snacks like sugar cane, curry fish balls, carrot and watermelon juice.

These are my favorite! I don’t even know what they are called, but they are made with egg batter and cooked in something resembling a waffle iron. They are hot and ready to eat out of a paper bag.

We tasted the red bean coconut pudding and a bowl of fresh mango, coconut milk and warm black sticky-rice at Huilau Shan:

Then we shopped at ‘Women’s Street’. It’s a long stretch of road with locals selling everything from jewelry, shoes, belts, and purses…

You’ll also find lots of local seafood restaurants.
