Autumn at Split Rock Lighthouse, Minnesota

On our return home from camping near Tettegouche State Park, we stopped for a visit at Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Split Rock Lighthouse is one of my favorite places in all of Minnesota. A National Historic Landmark, the lighthouse is perched atop a cliff 130 feet high above the crashing waves of Lake Superior. It is one of the most famous landmarks and most photographed places in the state.

Split Rock Lighthouse was also one of the very first places Cole and I decided to visit when we first moved to Minnesota from Washington, DC. I fell in love with the rugged and natural beauty of the North Shore. In the years since, we have been back a time or two for a picnic on the beach with babies in tow.

This year we loved bringing our kids back to see the dramatic view of Split Rock Lighthouse on the cliff, play on its shore, and hike its nearby state park trails. We even went on a self-guided tour which was a first for all of us. We had access to the exhibits in the visitor center, climbed up the spiral staircase inside the lighthouse tower, peeked out of its windows, and toured the keeper’s house next door.

Of course on our way home we had to stop for dinner at Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors. We absolutely love their caramel apple crunch pie and always ask for it to be served warm and à la mode!

The foggy autumn day visiting Split Rock Lighthouse and Betty’s Pies was the perfect end to our camping trip to the North Shore!
