For Christmas I flew to Hong Kong from Beijing. I can’t explain what it meant to me to be back in Hong Kong where I grew up, and to spend Christmas with my family. Leaving Beijing and coming to Hong Kong was honestly a huge culture shock for me. I specifically remember being really emotional about the overall cleanliness, new facilities, clean laundry, super modern technology, overhearing American pop songs like Katy Perry’s “Firework”, English speakers on TV, and riding the super efficient Airport Express. It was a strange feeling like I had time traveled into the future or something. Even though Hong Kong was very familiar to me, I had just been living in mainland China for so long. It was a shock.
St. John’s Cathedral in Central. I remember visiting on a field trip when I was a student at Hong Kong International School.
