Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, Japan

From Kyoto we took the shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima and arrived just in time (thanks to Cole’s impeccable timing and meticulous planning) for church at the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We attended a beautiful sacrament meeting and heard from several young missionaries who had just been transferred to Hiroshima from the disaster stricken areas of northeastern Japan. We were happy to see them safe. Following church we were off to lunch for a taste of the local fare. We stopped at our favorite okonomiyaki restaurant above the train station and sure enough it did not disappoint. With bellies full, we made our way to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park where we spent a significant portion of our afternoon wandering through exhibits and taking in as much information as we could about the war and atomic bomb. Outside the museum, we visited the Children’s Peace Monument and the eerie skeletal remains of the A-Bomb Dome in the rain. The somber weather seemed to fit the scene and mood.
