Our first stop in Kyoto was the impressive Fushimi Inari Shrine. The Shinto shrine is the head shrine dedicated to Inari, the deity of fertility, rice, and grains. Founded in 711, it is one of Kyoto’s oldest shrines. It sits at the base of a mountain, also called Inari, and consists of over 10,000 small torii (red gates) which line its footpaths. Tips:
*Fushimi Inari Shrine is located just outside JR Inari Station, a 5 minute ride and the second station from Kyoto Station along the JR Nara Line
*The head shrine dedicated to kami Inari, the god of rice and agriculture
*There are approximately 10,000 torii gates
*The shrine is open 24 hours and illuminated all night
*There is no entrance fee
