We just returned from a long weekend camping, hiking, and basking in autumn glory on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. The fall colors have popped among the trees throughout the wilderness areas, small towns, and hiking trails. Red, orange, and yellow leaves in a mix of sunshine and misty fog on our drive along this scenic byway. Waves crash on the shore against the black cliffs on the rugged shoreline. The view of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake, is so vast it looks like an ocean.
The first weekend in October is always one of my favorite weekends of the year not only because our family looks forward to long autumn drives to see the colors, enjoy the fall weather, and adventure on hikes, but because we get to listen to messages from General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We love listening to inspiring and uplifting messages from our church leaders and spending quality time together as a family while enjoying Earth’s beauty. It is always a highlight for us!
We left Friday morning since the kids had the day off from school and drove north to Tettegouche State Park. We set up our campsite, stopped at the visitor center, and had time to hike Shovel Point Trail before sunset. The weather on our first day was dark and cloudy but cool and perfect for hiking. Shovel Point is one of my favorite trails in Tettegouche because although it is a fairly easy and fun family-friendly trail, it still offers a lot of dramatic views of the north shore shoreline. Our dog Blue loved it too!
