We drove through St. Louis, Missouri on our way to Kentucky. It was a dark, cloudy, humid afternoon. We stopped on the bank of the Mississippi River to see the famous Gateway Arch (or Gateway to the West). Standing at 630 ft, it is the tallest man-made monument in the USA. Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen built the monument to commemorate Thomas Jefferson and St. Louis’ role in the westward expansion of the United States.
