Muir Woods National Monument, California

We spent a lovely afternoon walking through Muir Woods National Monument just outside of San Francisco. The forest is so peaceful – and the trees smell heavenly! Sunlight shines through the branches of the trees and it is so pretty.

This cross section shows historical events marked on the tree rings. The tree was over a thousand years old and lived through major historical events such as the building of cliff dwellings at Mesa Verda, Columbus sailing to America, and the California Gold Rush.
