Westminster & the British Museum, London, England

On the morning of our second day in London, I experienced my first English Breakfast! Our hotel served us a full breakfast which consisted of cooked eggs, ham (or is it bacon?), a giant sausage, side of baked beans, and white toast and jelly. I don’t think I needed lunch after that. Or dinner. Next, we hopped on the tube from St. Pancras/King’s Cross and set off to see Buckingham Palace. What a gorgeous morning! I never expected to see a sunny blue-sky day in London!

The impressive clock tower at St. Pancras. Our hotel was just two blocks away:

Cole in front of Buckingham Palace:

From Buckingham Palace we walked down to Trafalgar Square. Of course we saw plenty of red telephone booths on the way.

We also made an unexpected visit to the National Gallery. We saw Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” among many other famous paintings. We spent a big chunk of the morning here and as a bonus, the admission was completely free. This place would definitely be on my recommendation list!

Nelson’s Column at Trafalgar Square:

We crossed the Westminster Bridge to a park where we had a picnic lunch with a great view of Big Ben from across the Thames River.

The London Eye:

Our picnic spot with a view. We packed apple slices, grapes, cheese biscuits (not “crackers”), cheese, cookies and potato rings.

After lunch we stopped in at Westminster Abbey. We saw the tombs of English Kings, Queens and other royalty along with the graves of Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton, and Handel of “Handel’s Messiah”. What an amazing experience!

The busy London street outside Westminster Abbey:

From there we went to the British Museum. We saw the Rosetta Stone (smaller than expected), Egyptian mummies, and ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. We spent the rest of the evening exploring the museum until closing time. We had a lot of fun here!
