If you are ever in England, you must go to Windsor. A quick train ride out of London you will find Windsor Castle, the official residence of the Queen. Luckily for us, we visited Windsor on a weekend, and her Majesty the Queen was at home! You can tell because they will fly the red, blue and yellow colored flag above the castle when she is in residence. Basically, everything about Windsor felt like a magical fairytale.
We took the long paved road in front of the castle called “The Long Walk”, explored the castle grounds, and arrived just in time to see the changing of the guard at noon. I was so excited to see all the red coats and fuzzy helmets. Much to our surprise, we found out that the Queen goes to the horse races everyday and we might get the opportunity to see her! Of course Cole and I were thrilled, so we had a picnic lunch on The Long Walk until her car drove by…and there she was! The Queen of England! She smiled and waved as she drove by. And what a cute hat she had on! We also toured the beautiful St. George’s Chapel where King Henry VIII is buried. I got my picture with a royal guard (I loved these guys) and as the sun started to set we went for a stroll through Windsor Great Park. We saw horse carriages with gentlemen in top hats and ladies in floppy hats. We walked the entire length of The Long Walk (about 3 miles) and watched the Queen’s Royal Coaches making their way back to the castle and a gentleman tipped his hat to us as they rode by. How charming! On the opposite end of The Long Walk we reached the statue of King George III on his horse. I loved walking among the wildflowers and fields in Windsor Great Park and Cole suffered big time from seasonal allergies. While on our walk somewhere in the middle of Windsor Great Park, we just so happened to see the Queen, again! She was on her way home from the races. We also saw a little fawn hiding in the grass and herds of deer throughout the park. We did SO much walking, but exploring Windsor Great Park and seeing the Queen of England will forever be one of our most memorable parts of England. What an incredible day!
