Summer in England: British Museum & Platform 9 3/4 in London

Today is R’s “Yes Day” and he wants to spend the day at the British Museum!  We have breakfast, do some school work, and get ready to leave. On the way we stop at Pret A Manger at the bottom of the hill for lunch. While we are eating, there is a power outage in the neighborhood including our flat while Cole is working from home. I finish up lunch with the kids and we wait at the bus stop. We bus to the tube station then tube to the British Museum. We spend the entire afternoon at the British Museum! The kids love it, especially R. Their favorites include the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Samurai swords and armor exhibits. The older boys ask a curator questions. S’s dream comes true when a curator shows him an exhibit on Pompeii, and R is recommended the collections in Room 1. It is the oldest room in the present museum and such a cool space full of strange and interesting things! After visiting the British Museum, we walk to Russell Square tube station, stopping at Tesco to pick up some candy on the way. The kids are soooo grateful for the sweets and happy and it immediately gives everyone a pick-me-up after the big day at the museum. At the station, we walk down a spiral staircase with 176 steps to the trains while V is holding H all the way because his legs are tired! We hop on a train towards King’s Cross to find Platform 9 3/4. The kids line up and try pushing the trolley through the wall. H says “I’m so excited!” We check out the Harry Potter shop, and see all the wands! We call Cole and hop on a train back to Victoria Station where H falls asleep on the tube! The sweetest lady on the train catches up to me as I carry a sleeping H and guide the other kids as we exit the train. The lady and I have the sweetest conversation about the kids and motherhood. It really touched my heart. As we depart she says to the boys “now, you must be sure to take good care of your mum, right?” And the boys dutifully say “yes”. It was the sweetest thing! She was just the most wonderful lady and I will never forget the kindness she showed me! I carry sleeping H and guide the boys through Victoria train station during rush hour. Whew! We make our way to the underground, buy tickets for the two older boys for the fast train. We’re told to run on the train “quickly, quickly” and we all run super fast onto the train together just before the doors shut. We train to Clapham Junction and meet Cole at the station. We walk to The Plough for a delicious dinner before heading home. On our way the boys stop and play at the small playground in the courtyard before coming upstairs and getting ready for bed!
