Mackinac Island, Michigan: Charter Fishing on the Great Lakes

After two days exploring Mackinac Island, we decided to spend a day fishing on the Great Lakes. We woke up at 5am and drove across Mackinac Bridge which straddles Lake Huron and Lake Michigan and connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The morning view from the bridge was gorgeous. The sun rising on one side and the Super Blue Moon on the other.

We met our guide Captain Chris in St. Ignes and hopped on his boat with our food, water, and supplies. Captain Chris took us under the “Mighty Mac” bridge and we headed over to the fishing spot. Our boat passed lighthouses and buoys marking sunken shipwrecks along the way. When we stopped, Captain Chris prepared the fishing gear and we prepared food for the kids. Of course as soon as Cole takes a bite of his food, he catches and reels in a fish! A giant lake trout about 10 pounds! An amazing start to our day! We enjoyed beautiful weather, sunshine, fishing, eating snacks, and our oldest kid reeled in a 7 pounder all by himself!

As the sun began to set, we reeled in another almost 10 pounder to wrap up the day! Captain Chris was such an expert and an absolute delight! He was so knowledgeable and experienced, and genuinely enjoyed teaching us about fishing and the surrounding area of Michigan. In the evening our family enjoyed dinner in St. Ignace before heading back to our campsite. We all slept so well after a full day fishing! We are already looking forward to booking another trip!

Tips:

*Dress in sneakers and layers. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat.

*Bring food and water on the boat.

*If you plan to keep your catch, bring a cooler for fish.

*Keep realistic expectations. Remember it’s called fishing – not catching!
