Family Halloween Costume Ideas

October is one of my favorite months of the year – pumpkins, sweaters, leaves, and trick-or-treating on Halloween! Here are a few favorite family costumes from Halloweens of the past. We don’t usually spend a lot of time or money – we reuse items we already have, buy from Goodwill, or order on Amazon Prime Day in early October. We ask the kids their ideas and they always come up with something creative! It is fun to do as a family! Here are some of our favorites to help kick-off your Halloween family costume ideas.

Back to the Future:

Great Scott! Happy Halloween from Back to the Future! We already had a lot of costumes and clothes laying around to make Marty McFly, Doc, and “Mad Dog” Tannen. Everything else was ordered at discount prices during Amazon Prime Day – including a small flux capacitor toy, and giant cardboard cutout of the DeLorean time machine!

Home Alone:

Happy Halloween, ya filthy animal! One of our kids’ favorite Christmas movies made for a fun family Halloween costume to kick-off the approaching holiday season! Our youngest was Kevin McCallister with older brothers as Marv and Harry the burglars. We also had the Central Park pigeon lady and Old Man Marley the South Bend Snow Shoveler.

Top Gun Maverick:

Happy Halloween from the Danger Zone! Trick-or-treating with Maverick, Goose, Rooster and the flight crew! This is definitely one of our kids’ favorite costumes of all time – we made sure to get the aviator sunglasses (they still use to this day) and drew a mustache on Goose. The flight crew gear is cheap and from the hardware store. This family costume was so fun especially with theme music, haha.

The Princess Bride:

Inconceivable!! Our kids have been obsessed with sword fighting and Inigo Montoya since the day they could walk. This family costume was meant to be! The kids were Westley, Inigo Montoya, and Fezzik. We also had Buttercup, Count Rugen (the six fingered man) and our dog Blue was our Rat of Unusual Size (RUS). Inigo had a great fake mustache and there were plenty of fake weapons for sword play.

Jurassic Park

Dr. Grant and Laura Dern taking their dinosaurs trick-or-treating! We did have a hat for Dr. Grant but not sure where it went! The dinosaur costumes kept the kids warm on this cold Halloween night.

Star Wars

Happy Halloween from a galaxy far, far away… our first Halloween as parents and the best part for sure was baby Yoda in the baby carrier riding on Luke Skywalker’s back.

Harry Potter

This one October our family hosted a Harry Potter book club in addition to celebrating Halloween. Our kids loved dressing in Gryffindor neck ties and round glasses – which they used many more times throughout the year. Our friends let us borrow their amazing DIY Minerva McGonagall and Albus Dumbledore costumes from years past. Lastly, we couldn’t forget the wands and homemade pumpkin juice with fog from dry ice!

Batman

Batman, Robin, Alfred, and Catwoman for trick-or-treating at the Governor’s Mansion on Summit Avenue. It was the perfect backdrop for the Halloween festivities! Bruce Wayne would be proud.

Vikings

It was only right to have our kid dress like a Viking to meet Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota for trick-or-treating on Halloween night!

Skol, Vikings!

Storm Troopers

Give into the dark side… indulge in Halloween treats! Keep it simple and everyone dress like a storm trooper. It doesn’t matter how many storm troopers you have, the more the merrier! You can even make your own costume with the help of a Sharpie, white clothes, and beanie hat.

Pirates

Why do you think pirate costumes are so fun? They just ARRRRRR! Hats, swords, buckles, gold, and billowy shirts – extra points if you can get dad to wear eye makeup and earring a la Captain Jack Sparrow!

Ghosts

Nothing quite like the classic bedsheet ghost costume on Halloween. This nostalgic and simple costume makes Halloween spooky and fun for all… even the family dog!
